Network projects

We are investing in our electricity network to ensure a safe, reliable supply and to support the future energy needs of our communities. View our recent projects to see how we’re enhancing network resilience and capacity across South Canterbury.

Wool Works

15 Dec 2022

The Wool Works job consisted of the construction of a new customer owned substation. This was the first major decarbonization project in South Canterbury.

Tekapo solar trial

18 Oct 2017

A solar panel trial is underway as part of the exciting solar power installation opportunity. We have installed solar panels and an inverter on the roof of our Tekapo substation. As well as testing the equipment in a range of weather conditions such as high winds, heavy snow and hail, we're also gathering data and monitoring the site as part of our solar panel trial.

Green transformers

05 Sep 2017

Community-owned network company Alpine Energy is trialling 10 environmentally friendly transformers at Fonterra’s Clandeboye plant, near Temuka. The new transformers use vegetable oil as an insulating medium rather than traditional mineral oil and are the first of their kind to be used in the South Canterbury district.

New building

29 Aug 2017

In 2018 we will be moving into our purpose-built office building in Washdyke, bringing together 180 Alpine Energy, NETcon and Infratec staff. The 3000 square metre, two-level building, is not just another office block. We are exploring options to incorporate modern environmental and building innovations such as solar power, battery storage and harvesting rainwater

Battery storage trial

29 Aug 2017

We've started trialling a grid connected commercial battery energy storage system to better understand new and emerging technologies and role they play in our country’s future. The purpose of the five-year trial of the technology is to get more information about the impact of demand response, load shifting and alternative tariff structures from the perspective of a distribution lines company.

Ultra-fast broadband

29 Aug 2017

Ultra-fast broadband is not something commonly associated with an energy company but delivering wholesale fibre optic cable services to retailers is a growing enterprise for Alpine Energy. For more than five years we’ve been involved in owning and managing fibre optic networks throughout South Canterbury and, as a result of customer demand, we’re looking to expand the existing fibre network.
