Perth Street underground sub relocation
Great news for our inner-city Timaru community! We've just wrapped up a significant project aimed at enhancing our local electricity infrastructure. Our main objective was to remove an in-ground transformer and switch unit site, which posed a health and safety risk due to the difficulty of accessing it while live. By relocating the switches and transformer to an above-ground installation across the road, we not only improved safety but also modernised our system. With the two sites being 60 metres apart, this made the relocation a bit more challenging but ultimately successful.
This project was no small feat. It involved laying cables from the new transformer and ring main unit to the old site and tying them into the existing cabling, a major task that required meticulous planning and execution. We kicked off construction in January and successfully completed it by the end of March, right on schedule.
One of the most exciting aspects of this upgrade is that we no longer need to turn off the power to access the site, ensuring a continuous supply for our community. With the installation of new and modern equipment, our network is more efficient and reliable. A special shoutout to Menzies Group Limited, who did an amazing job with traffic management throughout the project.
This upgrade not only addressed immediate safety concerns but also ensures that our community can continue to thrive with a reliable power supply. A massive thanks to everyone involved, from planning and engineering to field services, for all their hard work and dedication.
