Community funding Q&As

Q: What led to the decision to suspend new funding for sponsorship and grants?

A: We identified an accounting error which resulted in overestimated historical network charges. This financial impact, along with a review of our company strategy, has necessitated the suspension of new funding for sponsorship and personal development grants for the remainder of this financial year. We are working with the Commerce Commission to address and correct the historical overcharging, a process we expect will take the next 12 months.

Q: How does this error affect current sponsorship and grant recipients?

A: Organisations with pre-existing arrangements will continue to receive support. The suspension of new funding does not impact these existing commitments, which will conclude in March 2025, coinciding with the new regulatory reset period.

Q: What steps is Alpine Energy taking to correct the issue?

A: We have rectified the issue that caused the error and are collaborating with the Commerce Commission to address the historical overcharging. Additionally, we are reassessing our funding strategy to align with our strategic goals and ensure responsible management of resources.

Q: How will Alpine Energy support the community moving forward?

A: Alpine Energy is committed to supporting the community and will be strategising on how best to partner with our community to align with our strategic purpose of “Empowering Our Vibrant and Thriving Communities Now and for the Future.” We will continue participating in community events, which many of the Alpine whanau love to do. We are also continuing our pilot of the Energymate scheme for customers who can benefit from improving their energy wellbeing.

Q: Are there alternative funding options available for organisations affected by this change?

A: Yes, we recommend reaching out to the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury, which offers various funding opportunities. More information can be found on their website or by contacting them directly (comtrust.org.nz).

Q: How can organisations and individuals get more information?

A: For more information, please contact us on 0800 661177 or mailbox@alpineenergy.co.nz. We are available to answer any questions and provide further assistance.
