South Canterbury's Double Boost for Electric Vehicles

Alpine Energy and Charge Net NZ have opened two fast electric vehicle charging stations in Timaru and Waimate.

South Canterbury’s first public electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations in Timaru and Waimate were officially opened by Andrew Tombs CEO of Alpine Energy, Steve West CEO of Charge Net NZ and the Mayors of Timaru and Waimate.

The installation of public EV fast-charging stations is part of a trend where EVs are becoming an increasingly viable and attractive option for everyday road users. More New Zealand businesses are also making the shift to 100% electric or plug-in electric hybrids.

Whilst EVs can be charged at home or at a workplace, a reliable and fast public charging infrastructure is essential to growing New Zealand’s electric fleet.

Alpine Energy chief executive Andrew Tombs says the roll out of fast charging units nation-wide will go a long way to deal with the dreaded “range anxiety” often talked about.

"Strategically located, our chargers will provide EV drivers with a convenient and fast means to top up their electric vehicles.

"We chose to partner with Charge Net because of their foresight into electric vehicles and the national reach they provide customers."

Alpine Energy supplied the infrastructure for the fast chargers, and Charge Net NZ, the operator of a nationwide electric vehicle charging network, is supplying the user-pays fast DC charger units, which provide an 80% charge in 10 to 25 minutes.

Charge Net NZ CEO Steve West says Charge Net is determined to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles nationwide.

"We are working in partnership with Alpine and it is encouraging that we have two fast chargers opening in South Canterbury in one day. We will have installed 4 fast chargers in the South Island this month and are looking at many more sites.

"These openings are a significant step in making EVs a viable option for more people living in the Canterbury region.”

Alpine Energy and Charge Net NZ have a cooperation agreement to explore future opportunities to install further EV fast-charging stations in South Canterbury.

The public EV fast-charging stations are at the corner of Victoria and North streets in Timaru, and beside Seddon Square, Queen Street, Waimate.
